William Newell

William Newell (1) who was an auctioneer and a commission agent, decided to try his hand at postmaster. He had built a new office and general store on Church Hill, close to St Mary Magdalene Church’s burial ground. Newell’s stay was brief, for like so many other at this time, he got “gold Fever’ and sought ‘fresh field and pastures new’. (2)
